BE WATER. BE UNITED. Stockholm Exhibition

The 3rd Anniversary of 12th June

BE WATER. BE UNITED.

On the road to restoration: Three years on since the Anti-extradition movement.

Most of the world remembers Hong Kong as once a unique metropolis, a city where “East Meets West” cross-cultural diversity blossomed, a place where people had freedom of speech and the right to protest, and were protected by The Hong Kong SAR Basic Law. It was a home to many, not only Hongkongers, but maybe to some of you passing by today, too?

After the Moral and national education (MNE) controversy, the Occupy Central with Love and Peace (OCLP) civil disobedience campaign in 2012, the Umbrella Movement in 2014, and the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement,in 2019, the world witnessed the fall of “One Country, Two Systems” in Hong Kong. Falling with it, not only is our right and freedom, but also our dignity as Hong Kongers.

From the peaceful 2 million people march, the unequal power struggle between protesters, the government and the police, to its puppet government becoming illegitimate, the implementation of the vague national security law, and the suppression of press freedom, , the Chinese Communist Party’s regime has revealed its absolute power over human rights and our beloved home.

Today marks three years since the 2019 anti-extradition movement settled into our city’s collective consciousness. While thousands of us have parted from our loved ones due to the ongoing political farce in Hong Kong, we shall never give in.

Through the lens of artists and creatives, we walk you through the significant events of the 2019–2020 Hong Kong protests, the artifacts that shaped the old Hong Kong, and our Lennon wall that flourished all over the world — we sincerely hope this exhibition not only serves to commemorate our journey to seek true democracy, to spark your memory, but that it is a wake-up call for us to realize how the rise of the authoritarianism violates everyone’s human rights and how that affects the world.
